Lyondell Chemical (NYSE:LYO) has become the first U. S. company to manufacture and market TBAc™ (tertiary butyl acetate), a cost-effective new building block for organic synthesis. Now available in commercial quantities, TBAc offers chemists a versatile alternative for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients, pesticides, and other fine chemicals.
Used as an organic synthesis reagent, TBAc can serve in enolate ion additions in its Li, MgBr, or ZnBr forms. It can be used in carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions such as halide displacements and additions to carbonyls (e.g., Claisen condensations and Reformatsky reactions). In addition, it can serve as a protecting group.
TBAc also can be used as a process solvent in reactions, extractions, crystallizations, and polymerizations. It extends Lyondell's line of process solvents, which includes ARCOPURE® HP-MTBE.
