Basell to exhibit at CompaMed 2007

November 12, 2007 – Basell will feature its Purell family of polypropylene and polyethylene resins at CompaMed 2007, the leading trade fair for the medical manufacturing market, from November 14 to 16 2007 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Basell will be located at stand J8, in Hall 8B.

“Our presence at CompaMed is another way of demonstrating our strong commitment to customers in the highly regulated medical devices market,” said Mike Freudenstein, Basell’s marketing manager for polyethylene solutions. “Customers who are seeking a clear advantage in terms of design, regulatory requirements and functionality can learn about how the unique Medical Procedure followed by Basell in association with our high-performance Purell resins’ family can facilitate approvals.”

With its dedicated Purell grades Basell supports medical applications by its customers in bottles, vials, containers, closures, tubes, disposable laboratory and diagnostic applications, empty and disposable radiation-resistant syringes and packaging for inhaler systems. These are packed separately and not pre-filled.

The Basell-developed Medical Procedure has been specifically designed to ensure high quality standards within the development of resins used by medical manufacturers with special requirements. Their products must undergo an intensive validation process before they are approved for use by the relevant regulatory authorities, which can take months to complete. The Basell Medical Procedure helps converters and final part producers to obtain the necessary approvals for their final products.

“Customers of Purell resins are informed at least 24 months in advance of any relevant changes to the formulation that might become necessary,” said Freudenstein. In addition, quality audits by converters can be arranged upon request. For the delivery of its Purell products, Basell only uses selected and approved hauliers.

Basell will feature two new low density polyethylene grades at CompaMed - Purell PE 2420F and Purell PE 3020H. Both resins address the specialised requirements of customers in medical blown film applications. These resins can be used by customers in the production of flexible packaging for liquid pharmaceuticals, medical preparations and medical devices.

The new products surpass the performance capabilities of conventional polyethylene, particularly when it comes to their high level of purity. “Thanks to Basell’s Medical Procedure, Purell 2420F and Purell 3020H achieve the specified properties and performance without the use of additives,” said Alexander Woerz, Basell’s application development manager. “This eliminates the problem of small amounts of additives migrating into the application, which can occur with conventional resins.”
