Basell Australia’s Geelong Plant wins 07 Plastics&Chemical Industry Association Sustainability Award

July 2, 2007 – Basell Australia is pleased to announce its Geelong polypropylene plant has received the 2007 Sustainability Award for Chemical Plants for the successful completion and commissioning of its expansion project in 2006. The award was presented at the Plastics and Chemicals Industry Association (PACIA) National Conference in Sydney, Australia earlier in June.

The PACIA Sustainability Awards recognise chemical and plastic companies, individuals and groups who have demonstrated progress in sustainability through innovative projects and activities that have improved the economic, environmental and social outcomes for their business, supply chain, community and other partners.

According to the awards’ judging panel, which is comprised of both industry and conservation and environmentally focused public group representatives, the criteria for Basell Geelong plant’s success were:

- The environmental improvements brought about by the expansion project, which reduced unit energy requirements by 85%

- The safe implementation of the project – only two minor medical treatment incidents

- The extensive proactive engagement and consultation with the community, neighbours and stakeholders

“This award recognises Basell Australia’s continuous effort in health, safety and environmental improvements,” stated David Stannard, Basell Australia’s Geelong Plant Site Manager.  “We would like to sincerely thank the Geelong local community for its support to the expansion project and contribution to the sustainable development of our Geelong plant.”

Basell Australia’s Clyde polypropylene plant was also a Finalist in the 2007 PACIA Environment Award for Chemical Companies.
