Basell launches Clyrell RC 514 L select polypropylene high-transparency resin

Feburary 20, 2007 - Basell’s Clyrell RC 514 L select polypropylene resin is now available with enhanced transparency and other outstanding performance features that address the typical requests of form-fill-seal (FFS) customers in the packaging applications sector, historically the domain of PET and polystyrene.

Customer trials have shown that this Clyrell resin can outperform standard polypropylene in clarity as well as mechanical strength and processing capabilities, attributes regarded by converters as essential for FFS packaging applications. In addition, Clyrell RC 514 L’s qualities include excellent stiffness and high production throughput. Unlike PET, this new material can be hot filled, pasteurised and microwave-heated. The resin can be of interest for customers using both multilayer co-extrusion and film lamination techniques and the desire to produce packaging with higher aesthetic appeal.

Today’s food packaging utilises the FFS process to protect fresh foods and ready-meals in aseptic-filled, pre-packed FFS blisters. The FFS process provides the speed and flexibility necessary to package foods at their peak of freshness. This demanding production process requires an equally tough resin.

“The resin can replace more conventional FFS polymers such as polystyrene and PET because its combination of properties makes this grade a particularly competitive alternative at the moment,” said Cees Besems, Basell’s project manager for innovation and new business. ”Further, there are weight savings that can be achieved using Clyrell RC 514 L. Customer trials have demonstrated that a 25% weight saving can be achieved compared to A-PET, leading to a direct cost saving for the end user.”

The resin is currently manufactured in Europe and is available for export. Basell’s family of select polypropylene Clyrell grades all provide a remarkable combination of optical and mechanical properties – in particular high transparency, gloss and impact strength.
