IndianOil selects Basell's Hostalen technology for a new 300 KT HDPE plant

Indian Oil Corporation Limited has selected Basell’s Hostalen technology for a new 300 KT per year high density polyethylene plant it will build at Panipat, India. Start-up is planned for 2007.

“IndianOil carefully evaluated all available technologies before making the selection,” said Just Jansz, president of Basell’s Technology Business, who participated in a signing ceremony in New Delhi.  “Basell’s Hostalen technology was selected because it offered the best overall economic value and is commercially proven.”

The Hostalen technology is a low-pressure, slurry process with dual reactors that can operate in series or in parallel to produce products with customized properties. “Hostalen technology is a state-of-the-art, established process that has been in operation in India for many years. It continues to provide the flexibility and performance customers seek. Bimodal products from the Hostalen process are considered industry benchmarks,” Jansz added.

At the end of last year, IndianOil also selected Basell’s Spheripol technology for two new polypropylene lines with a combined annual capacity of 600 KT.

Basell’s complete portfolio of licensed technologies includes:

• Spheripol – polypropylene technology for the production of homopolymer, random and heterophasic copolymers.
• Spherizone – next generation polypropylene technology based on new multi-zone reactor technology.
• Spherilene – swing gas phase process for the production of LLDPE and HDPE.
• Hostalen - low-pressure slurry process for the production of bimodal HDPE.
• Lupotech G – fluidised bed gas phase process for the production of HDPE and MDPE.
• Lupotech T – high pressure tubular reactor process for the production of LDPE and EVA copolymers.

Basell also produces and commercialises advanced catalyst systems which are sold under the Avant trade name.

Basell is the world's largest producer of polypropylene and advanced polyolefin products, a leading supplier of polyethylene and catalysts, and a global leader in the development and licensing of polypropylene and polyethylene processes. Basell, together with its joint ventures, has manufacturing facilities around the world and sells products in more than 120 countries.
