ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, December 18, 2008 – LyondellBasell Industries will feature its latest innovative product and technology offerings at Interplastica 2009, Russia’s premier trade fair for the plastics and rubber industries. Interplastica will be held from January 27 to 30 at Moscow’s Exhibition Center in Krasnaya Presnya.  LyondellBasell’s stand will be located at 1D 28/E 29 in Hall 1.

“Interplastica provides an exciting platform to present LyondellBasell as a leader in the petrochemical industry,” says Elena Cherkinskaya, Head of LyondellBasell’s Moscow Representative Office. “Customers seeking a competitive advantage who are already very familiar with our innovative polyolefins and technologies will learn about our recent developments that can deliver even more value. We also want to show our customers that we are committed to serving the needs of the region.”

Resins based on the Advanced Cascade Process

LyondellBasell’s exhibit will include a new range of Hostalen high-density polyethylene (HDPE) resins produced using the Hostalen Advanced Cascade Process (ACP). By utilizing cascade reactor technology, multi-modal resins based on the Hostalen ACP technology offer a unique combination of product properties that are not achievable with conventional uni-modal or bi-modal HDPE grades. Customers select Hostalen resins for use in pipe, high performance film, blow molding and caps and closures applications.

The new Hostalen ACP 5231D expands the range of multimodal HDPE resins used in blow molding applications. It provides a higher level of optimized density and tailor-made stiffness, very high environmental stress-cracking resistance (ESCR) and smooth processability. Other Hostalen ACP-based resins will be featured, including Hostalen ACP 6541A resins used by customers in injection-molded closures for beverage bottles as well as healthcare and cosmetics applications. The material exhibits an outstanding combination of properties, such as higher stiffness with very good processability and ESCR. Additionally, it exhibits very good organoleptic properties that are essential for closure applications.

Portfolio of specialty products used in pipe and pipe coating applications

Other new LyondellBasell product developments to be highlighted include multimodal HDPE resins used by customers in pipe and pipe coating applications. The new Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR Black resin, a PE100 compound designed to be considered by our customers for use in pipes for trenchless and sandless laying installation techniques, exhibits excellent resistance to slow crack propagation. The resin meets the technical requirements of the German specification 1075, providing a Full Notch Creep Test performance above 10,000 hours. “Following the success of Hostalen CRP100 Black resins used in pressure gas & water pipe, the new Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR Black resin complements LyondellBasell's offering by enlarging the portfolio of resins to be considered by our customers for use in the field of applications for PE pipes. The property spectrum of HDPE has been broadened even further through our latest-generation Hostalen ACP process technology,” explains Domenico Gigliobianco, Commercial Director in LyondellBasell’s Moscow Representative Office.

Completing LyondellBasell’s full-system supplier portfolio is its polybutene-1 (PB-1) family of resins used in customer pipe applications. PB-1 is characterized by creep resistance and flexibility, and is used in flexible pressure piping for domestic hot and cold drinking water.

LyondellBasell also offers a range of high-performance pipe coating products used in anti-corrosion coating, mechanical protection and thermal insulation coating of oil, gas and water transportation pipelines. The Lupolen 4552D SW00413 resin is a new-generation multi-modal black HDPE product produced using the Hostalen ACP process. It is selected by customers due to its outstanding resistance to impact and environmental stress cracking (ESCR), as well as its excellent processability at higher coating speeds. In addition, the company has launched a new grafted adhesive PE resin, Lucalen G 3710E, which is selected by customers for its improved coating and adhesion properties.

Meeting the automotive industry’s growing needs

LyondellBasell will also feature its Hostacom PP compounds and highlight its global product sourcing capabilities in response to the increasingly-expanding automotive business requirements in Russia and Central Europe. With compounding facilities in close proximity to the growing number of automotive manufacturing plants in Eastern Europe, the company can provide OEMs with the material consistency they demand, regardless of where their regional operations are located. Special focus will be placed on the company’s Softell PP compounds, which are used by customers in automotive interiors requiring soft-to-the-touch qualities, high aesthetic appeal, and excellent finish and color consistency. Compared to competitive interior solutions such as painted ABS, Softell PP compounds offer additional advantages to be considered by our customers for automotive interiors, including excellent processability and extensive design potential.

The company’s new range of butene-1 based plastomers, marketed under the trade name Koattro, will also be on exhibit. The new resin can be considered for use in the production manufacture of elastic applications such as film, fiber, tapes, closure lines and aesthetic injection molding. Koattro resins feature outstanding compatibility to polypropylene, which enable improvements in flexibility, transparency, tensile properties, shrinkage modification, scratch resistance and stress-whitening behavior.

Strategic focus in a dynamic region

LyondellBasell’s pioneering polyolefin and chemical process technologies will be showcased as well. Further reinforcing the company’s commitment to the region is the first integrated, world-scale petrochemical complex to be built in Karabatan, Kazakhstan. LyondellBasell’s PE and PP technologies have been selected by Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc. LLP for three new plants that will have a combined capacity of 1,300 KT of polyolefins per year.

“As the global leader in polyolefins technology, we offer differentiating processes that enable our customers in Russia and neighboring countries to remain competitive and responsive to market dynamics,” said Cherkinskaya. “The region requires world-scale plants that can take full advantage of locally-sourced petrochemical feedstock, the most modern technology and the best knowledge and experience in sales and marketing.”

In addition, LyondellBasell is studying the feasibility of establishing production facilities for PP-based compounds in Russia to meet the fast-growing demand of the country’s automotive industry.

LyondellBasell’s joint venture in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company, is scheduled to start up world-class production facilities at the end of this year which will provide another competitive supply source for Russian customers.

Alastian, one of LyondellBasell’s online business channels, will also be on display at Interplastica. Available to customers in Russia and Central Europe for the past two years, Alastian has already proven its value with 200 registered users in the CIS region.
